One of Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers announced it will spend nearly $100 across its North American operations on the production of a new engine. Stellantis will invest $99 million at facilities in Dundee, Michigan; Kokomo, Indiana; and Etobicoke, Ontario, company officials announced.

The bulk of the funding — $83 million — will retool the Dundee Engine Complex for the final assembly of the new engine, a 1.6-liter, I-4 turbocharged system with direct fuel injection that can accommodate hybrid-electric vehicles. The engine blocks will be cast at the Kokomo plant, where over $14 million will be spent to overhaul its die-cast machines and cells.

The Etobicoke Casting facility near Toronto, meanwhile, will see nearly $2 million to develop and install upgraded tooling and equipment to make the new engine’s oil pans.

Stellantis officials said the engine, based on one currently made by the automaker in Europe, would be its first for hybrid cars in North America. Production is expected to begin in 2025, after which it will power two forthcoming hybrid models in the region.

The Dundee plant will continue to make engines for Jeep vehicles. The company did not detail how the new spending could impact its workforce at those three facilities.
