Last week Tesla’s Giga Press manufacturer IDRA released a video teasing a new 9000-ton Giga Press being assembled at the company’s Lombardy Italy factory. In the 21-second video, IDRA did not share a lot of details about the new machine besides stating it will be “coming in 3 weeks.”

Currently, Tesla uses 6000-ton Giga Presses to build the front and rear chassis of the Model Y as single pieces. Using the Giga Press has allowed Tesla to decrease parts that make up the rear body of the Model Y from 120 to 1.

This enables Tesla to eliminate several welding robots from the production line, decrease the footprint of the factory, and decrease manufacturing time, complexity, and assembly errors.

Having a single-piece rear body as opposed to 120 also makes the Mode Y lighter, stiffer, and simply an overall better product but at a cheaper price.

And given the Giga Press’ importance to making Tesla vehicles better, it created a lot of excitement when IDRA released footage of a new 50% more powerful 9000-ton Giga Press.

At the time of the video’s release, a lot of people including myself had speculated the new more powerful Giga Press will be used to build the Cybertruck.

However, given Tesla has said the Cybertruck will be built from cold-rolled stainless steel whereas the Model Y is built from aluminum, it wasn’t exactly clear how the new 9000-ton Giga Press would fit in the Cybertruck’s production.

Taking this fact into account some have even speculated the new casting machine is more likely for the Tesla Semi, or to build more parts of the Model Y in a single piece.

You see in casting metals, which is what Giga Presses do, the metal is heated until it is molten and poured into a mold to create the final form. And since aluminum has a significantly lower melting point than stainless steel, it makes sense to use a Giga Press to build the Model Y’s aluminum body.

And with stainless steel's significantly higher melting point, it was not exactly clear if the new Giga Press could be used to build the Cybertruck.

However, today in response to IDRA’s latest video showing assembly of the 9000-ton Giga Press, Elon Musk has confirmed the new machine will indeed be used for the Cybertruck.

Musk’s statement came in response to Tesla enthusiast and investor Sawyer Meritt’s tweet announcing “IDRA has posted a new video of their 9,000 ton Giga Press being assembled.” And Musk simply responded to the tweet by saying “Cybertruck body.”

This is incredible news and as I have mentioned at the beginning of the article, last week IDRA said the new 9000-ton Giga Press will finish assembly in 3 weeks which today will mean the new machine will be done in 2 weeks.

Most Cybertruck production estimates predict the post-apocalyptic truck will not begin production until late 2023 with initial deliveries starting in early 2024. And to see one of the biggest components necessary to build the Cybertruck almost finished gives us hope the futuristic truck might come sooner.

However, having said that, even if the new Giga Press is finished in 2 weeks, that doesn’t mean Tesla can start producing the Cybertruck this June.

After assembly, the Giga Press will undergo testing, then if everything is working correctly, it will then be disassembled, transported to Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory, reassembled, retested, and only then can the Giga Press actually start pumping out Cybertrucks.

Given the complexity of disassembling, shipping, and reassembling such a gigantic machine, it will not at all be surprising if the process takes several months to over a year.

Nonetheless, it’s still exciting to see Cybertruck’s production pieces starting to come together. As of now, we still don’t know how the Giga Press will be used to build the Cybertruck and when exactly Tesla plans to start the first deliveries.
