No fireworks at Chase Field on July 4; will they return to DBacks games?

The fireworks show at Chase Field has become a Valley staple on or near July 4th each year.

Ongoing roof issues with Chase Field has resulted in the Arizona Diamondbacks canceling its fireworks show against the San Francisco Giants on July 4.

The game was originally scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m., with the fireworks to follow, but the team moved the game up to 3:10 p.m. as a result of not having the show.

The team issued a release earlier this month announcing the change in the game time and saying that anticipated high temperatures made it so the team could not keep the Chase Field roof open for the game and post-game fireworks show.

The Diamondbacks did announce that they would be giving away a patriotic 4th of July t-shirt to the first 10,000 fans in attendance.

The Diamondbacks are unable to open and close Chase Field's roof when fans are present because of concerns about the cables in the roof's pulley system.

Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall said in April there is no threat of the roof collapsing, but inspectors informed the Diamondbacks that a broken cable could potentially endanger fans.

"It’s almost like a bungee-type rope,” Hall told The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro. “Could it snap and fall and hit a fan? They just don’t know how far it could drop, how far it would go down. They don’t want to take the chance. But it’s not as if the roof could cave in."

Sections of the ballpark’s roof are connected by more than four miles of cable strung through a pulley system, which is operated by 200-horsepower motors.

At the time, Hall said the Diamondbacks intend to have the cables replaced but said the repair would take “several months,” meaning it likely will have to wait until the offseason.

The Diamondbacks have to make decisions early on game days as to whether the roof will be open or closed.

If the forecast calls for any inclement weather the team errs on the side of keeping it shut. The twilight starts when the club would open the roof after three innings also are not happening this season.

In April, Hall said the company that performed the inspection, Hatch, graded four sections of the roof and found that one section scored lower.

Hall said the roof had always been able to open and close in a little more than four minutes, but that until the cables are repaired it has to be positioned at a much slower pace, taking roughly 20 minutes.

In a statement about the time change, the club provided an update of sorts on the roof.

The Diamondbacks said they have been "exploring options for replacing the cable while the team is on the road, one section at a time. Recommendations for necessary repairs and a realistic timetable to do so with both the in-season baseball schedule and off-season events schedule have yet to be given."

The club has had multiple postgame fireworks displays already this season, holding them on nights when the roof was open for the game.

The Diamondbacks do not have any more fireworks dates listed on their schedule in September, when the weather is typically cooler, but the team might add them if temperatures allow.

With the Diamondbacks game scheduled to begin at 3:10 p.m., fans should be able to get to a July 4 fireworks show somewhere else in the Valley.

Fireworks are still scheduled in Apache Junction  (Apache Junction High School), Glendale (Westgate Entertainment District), Scottsdale (WestWorld of Scottsdale and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess), and Litchfield Park (The Wigwam).

July 4 fun:Fireworks, other celebrations this weekend around metro Phoenix

The Diamondbacks are not the only host to cancel or change its 4th of July fireworks this year.

Phoenix has canceled its 2022 Fourth of July shows, while Chandler replaced its fireworks show with a 5-minute pyrotechnic show.

Tempe will not have fireworks at its celebrations on July 3.  Fountain Hills moved its show to July 1.
